Why the world’s dentists are coming to Mumbai

By Dr. Vishwas Puranik

With national dental association leaders at the FDI World Dental Federation, Prague, 2026

From 21 to 24 October 2027, the FDI World Dental Congress comes to the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. It is the third time the congress will be held in India, and the Indian Dental Association is co-host.

What is FDI?

The FDI World Dental Federation, founded in Paris in 1900, brings together national dental associations from around the world to speak for oral health globally. Its annual World Dental Congress is where those associations meet, set policy and share science. At the 2026 congress in Prague, 135 countries and 189 dental associations took part.

What to expect in Mumbai

  • More than 30,000 delegates and visitors, over 100 speakers and more than 500 exhibitors are expected.
  • A scientific programme built with general practitioners in mind, with continuing-education credits.
  • Sessions on artificial intelligence in dentistry, digital and guided implant dentistry, antimicrobial resistance, laser dentistry and endodontics.
  • An exhibition that brings global dental technology to Indian practitioners.

Why it matters for India

For Indian dentists, a congress at home means world-class learning without the cost of travel, a chance to present Indian research to a global audience, and an opportunity for students to see the profession at its broadest. For Mumbai, it means welcoming the world’s dentists to one of its great cities.

The Reception Committee

Dr. Vishwas Puranik, former National President of the Indian Dental Association, is Chairman of the congress’s Reception Committee, which looks after how delegates from every continent are received. At Prague in 2026 he represented India and invited the world to Mumbai.
